One year after 3 members of the House of Representatives were accused by The United States of America of sexual abuse on US soil, the Nigerian media had since put the matter to rest. Hinteractive Nigeria has however kept a watch on the activities of these members of parliament namely, Mohammad Garba Gololo (APC, Bauchi), Mark Ghillah (Benue) and Sam Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom).
Sam Ikon, who is the member representing Etinan Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, is also the Chairman House Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Committee, a position which requires Hon. Ikon to be travelling outside Nigeria and across many countries of the world frequently.
It was in the course of one of his numerous oversea trips in June 2016 that Hon. Ikon and two other members of the Nigerian National Assembly were accused of sexual misconduct and attempted rape. They were on a leadership training in Cleveland, Ohio and we’re accused by the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria James Entistle. Ikon denied the accusations and threatened to sue Entistle and the American government if the accusation was not retracted. The Nigerian National Assembly ethics committee opened an investigation into the accusation.
Mr. Entistle’s petition read:
“It is with regret that I must bring to your attention the following situation. Ten members of the Nigerian National Assembly recently travelled to Cleveland, Ohio as participants in the International Visitor Leadership Program on good governance.
We received troubling allegations regarding the behavior of three members of the delegation to the U.S. Government’s flagship professional exchange program.
The U.S Department of State and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs received reports from employees of the Cleveland hotel, where the representatives stayed, alleging the representatives engaged in the following behavior:
“Mohammed Garba Gololo allegedly grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for sex. While the housekeeper reported this to her management, this incident could have involved local law enforcement and resulted in legal consequences for Representative Gololo.
Mark Terseer Gbillah and Samuel Ikon allegedly requested hotel parking attendants to assist them to solicit prostitutes.”
The ambassador expressed concern that these acts of misconduct could jeopardize American-Nigerian diplomatic relations, adding that it also negatively impacts Nigeria’s public image.
One year after the Scandal, Hinteractive Nigeria report reveals that Hon. Sam Ikon’s official duties are still not carried out without a woman in the picture.
More than once in 2017 alone, Hon. Ikon has had to travel outside Nigeria on official engagement with his wife. In June 2017, Sam Ikon travelled to Brussels for official engagement in the European Parliament. Earlier in 2017, Hon. Ikon was being hosted to lunch by the Speaker of Zanzibar House of Representatives in Zanzibar along with Mrs Ikon.
It is not yet clear whether Hon. Ikon is fighting to save his marriage by having to travel with his wife abroad on official assignments, but what is clear is the fact that constituents who spoke to Hinteractive Nigeria are worried that the Member of Parliament is wasting tax payers money trying to make up to his wife for past misdemeanor.
