lagos—Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday, told stakeholders along the Oshodi-Airport Road  being reconstructed of impending hardship the project will cause while it lasted. He however added that measures are in place to minimise the inconvenience.

Ambode, who disclosed features included in the project at a stakeholders’ meeting in Ikeja yesterday, said; “Let me say without mincing words there are bound to be some inconvenience during the construction period but measures have been put in place to mitigate the impact. We therefore solicit your co-operation, support and understanding keeping in mind that the ultimate goal is to facilitate improvement in the quality of life and overall standard of living of communities within the vicinity of the project.”

Speaking about final expectationfrom the project, the governor said he has approved construction of two flyovers and three pedestrian bridges along the stretch.

He added that funds for the project would be sourced through the state Internally Generated Revenue, IGR and the road would be toll-free.

The governor, who was represented by Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Adebowale Akinsanya, stressed that the expansion project would give modern face-lift to Nigeria’s international gateway and conform with International standards obtainable in developed nations of the world.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Jimi Hotonu, said the government convened the forum to declare its intention and address anxiety of stakeholders on the project.

Managing Director, Hitech Construction, the contractor handling the project, Ivan Bekker, assured that the road would be constructed to meet world standard.

He also solicited for the co-operation of residents and appealed for assistance of traffic management authorities so as to help reduce the inconvenience that would arise during construction work.

 FAAN appeals for understanding

Meantime, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, yesterday appealed to passengers and other airport users that ply the Oshodi to Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos to exercise caution and understanding as they will be subjected to some inconveniences as the Lagos State government commence the reconstruction of the rRoad.

A statement by Mrs Yakubu Henrietta, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, said: “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria wishes to notify passengers and other airport users that the Lagos State Government has commenced the reconstruction of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Road, Lagos. The project which would last for 15 months is aimed at expanding the road for better service to users.”
