Members of the Orange September mascot crew have cried out over what they deem exploitative tendencies of the management of the Akwa Ibom state Government run Orange September programme.
Members of the ‘Orange men’ crew who spoke to Hinteractive Nigeria have alleged that they are paid less than half the amount approved for the outing. The amount they are paid to walk Kilometers on foot in the Ministry of Tourism managed campaign, we are told is five thousand Naira only for a day. Our interviewees say they are supposed to walk the streets across the three Senatorial district of Akwa Ibom State for three days.
While speaking with Hinteractive, members of the crew fear that monies meant for them has been siphoned and as they can not approach the commissioner in Charge, Hon. Victor Antai for help, they have no other option than to go to the press to register their grievance.
Explaining why they have to be paid more, one of the team members said that the Orange paint on their skin could have a negative effect on sensitive parts of their bodies since paints are made with strong chemicals. If paid more, the reactional damage on their skin might not matter, they reason.
Against earlier claim from some quarters that the crew members were professional acrobatic robot walkers, Hinteractive can report that ninety percent of the team members were Akwa Ibom youths, majority of which are University of Uyo and Akwa Ibom State University Students. The students said they were recruited by Flexy, a State based professional dancer, on behalf of the Commissioner of Tourism, Hon. Victor Antai.
Hinteractive also gathers that the crew members are about one hundred in number.
