The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution authorising the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, to constitute transition committees to run the affairs of the thirty one local government areas in the state.
The resolution followed the request of the state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, to the state legislature seeking authorisation to constitute Transition Committees for the local government areas in the state.
The tenure of the present transition committees will expire on Monday, July 3, 2017.
According to the governor, the transition committees, when constituted, will last for six months within which elections will be conducted.
The governor said the request was necessitated by prevailing circumstances which he said made it impractical to conduct elections before the expiration of the present transition committees.
All the members who spoke during deliberations on the matter supported the governor’s request especially given the fact that AKISIEC had set in motion processes for conduct of local government elections in November this year.
Twenty Two members attended the day’s plenary.
Meanwhile the state governor has also forwarded the name of Doctor Dorathy Thompson to the state legislature for confirmation as chairman, Ethical and Attitudinal Re-Orientation Committee, EARCOM.
The nominee replaces Mr Jerry AKPAN who had earlier been nominated by the governor for the position.
The speaker referred the message to the house committee on Judiciary, Justice, Human Rights and Public Petitions for further legislative action.
