Ika is the latest in the league of Local Governments in Akwa Ibom State to witness horrendous political violence not unconnected with forthcoming Local Government elections.

The most recent victim is a certain Dr Aniekan, popularly known as Ember.

Dr Aniekan, who was from Atomo village in Ika, was killed on Monday, 31st July 2017.

A family member of the decease told Hinteractive Nigeria that Dr Aniekan was killed by his political enemies because of his known opposition views on the administration of Ika.

Decrying the incident, the family member who mentioned his name to be Udeme Oscar, said that the loss of a man of that intellectual and social level, is very painful. He called on security agencies to ensure that the killers of his uncle are brought to book.

When Hinteractive Nigeria contacted the Divisional Police office in Ika, the police confirmed the incident, assuring that investigation was in full swing towards arresting the culprits.

Dr Aniekan Ember who was working with the Local Government service was of the All Progressives Congress and he was known to be nursing an ambition to run for chairmanship of Ika before he met his untimely death.

Speaking on the incident, a son of Ika and Social media activist, Mr Joseph Esu lambasted the council’s transition chairperson, Hon. Mrs Inibehe Etukudo saying that she has disappointed the people of Ika and betrayed the confidence reposed on her by Governor Udom Emmanuel who appointed her to be the chief security officer in Ika.

Mr Esu in an open letter to the chairman made available to Hinteractive says that the insecurity level in Ika is at an all-time high making it impossible for trade to thrive as people can no longer be outside their homes after 4pm.

As at press time, Hinteractive gathers that the Police had invited and interrogated people, including the youth caucus chairman, in relation to the current insecurity level in the area.
